This young, fresh production of the Shakespearean classic sees the town of Verona transformed into St. Verona’s- an elite catholic high school in which the Montague and Capulet cliques rule the courtyard, where Prince (the school principal) fights to maintain order over the disruptive students. A story of love, lust, hate, revenge, and all manner of ‘violent delights’. The story is narrated by the omnipresent Tattle Maiden, who leaves no secrets untold- except her own identity.

Head to the Henry Lawson Theatre to see Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ brought to the 21st Century. Whilst director Nicole Madden’s fresh take on the classic tragedy retains Shakespeare’s beautiful poetic language, it will see the fair Verona reimagined as St Verona’s – a fictional private school in contemporary Australia.
4th Wall Review
Henry Lawson Theatre’s Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful production of one of Shakespeare’s most loved plays. Director Nicole Madden has transformed Verona into St Verona’s, a Catholic high school. This decision works better for some scenes than it does for others - so much of the action takes place off school grounds that I’m not sure that this was a necessary change. However, I did enjoy the introduction of the Tattle Maiden, and the way that technology and social media has been integrated into the play is stupendous. Madden has obviously thought about the way technology would impact the story and uses it to brilliant effect – the tension is heightened in all the right parts of the show.
